The Soto Fiasco: A Distraction from Their Future Failings in the Market

The biggest fear here was not getting one Soto, it's that they were using this as a distraction not to sign anybody else of significance. Not getting Soto was a foregone conclusion. Being $65 million away is not really a competitive offer. The Red Sox were probably never going to out bid Steve Cohen and Soto was always going to take the highest paying deal. It was futile, but if they actually wanted the player they would have come in at least $750 million. The reports of the Sox being “around” $700 million means it was under that mark and there fore, again, un competitive.

I won’t even give them credit for bidding up the asking price. The Yankees did that to themselves because they actually wanted the player. The entire exercise was in short, bullshit. The Cubs or Cardinals or Dodgers could have been in the mix too, but they read the market. The Red Sox used it as a stunt.

However, if there is any thought behind this to show players that Boston is back in the market for high priced players, I'll give them credit. Hopefully players are dumb too and think the Red Sox putting the third worst offer on the table for Soto means they're willing to spend else where. I wouldn’t hold my breathe. Investing in a 26 year old all world hitter is a lot different investment than a 30 year pitcher. The front office dork’s may very well have a value chart that tells them the top starting pitcher on the market is only worth the square root of their expected spin rate multiplied by pi or whatever the fuck nerds say.

Just spare me all the “pivot” talk. The Red Sox are farther away from actually competing than just adding Soto. They should not have to pivot. They should simply execute the plan that should have been in place months ago. Look, if Burns or Fried is not in a Red Sox uniform by the end of the week, it's a fail. I consider it a fail even if they trade for Crochet. This team needs two front end starting pitchers. They have a log jam of young infielders and a log jam of left handed bats. Even if this team miraculously got Soto they still would have work to do. None of that changed the second the Soto Faced ended. As I stated at the top, this is when you should be very concerned as a Red Sox fan. This historically in recent years is where we watch top end talent sign every where but Boston as we learn about the woeful low ball offers get rejected in a fit of laughter.
