Are the Bruins in a good position?

(Enter your mother joke) The Bruins have 2 bonafide studs under the age of 30. Pasternak and McAvoy. Beyond that are question marks and a core of Bergeron, Marchand, Krejci, and Rask all over the age of 32. Don’t get me wrong Bergy, Marchand, Rask are elite players at their positions and the Bruins should compete for a cup this season. But what about in the very near future?

I was expecting and hoping for full on changes this off season while still holding on to a chance at a cup and I think those opportunities were there. Yes they unceremoniously let Chara walk, but what about Tuukka? Rask is still one of the best goalies in the league on the last year of his deal. The Bruins needs cap space and after what transpired in the bubble you can’t imagine the relationship is tip top. If you listen to Cassidy talk about it you can read not so subtly between the lines what he thought should have happened. David Krejci, god love him, is another expiring contract with value on a team pushing for the cup. Beyond the salary considerations, this just seems like an easy move to “shake up” the room. New blood can do wonders and you already have your #2 center in Coyle. Trading Bergeron or Marchand certainly bring back the most value, but lets not get crazy here. I’d rather poke myself in the eye with a stick than watch another Boston Hallmark like Bergeron play in another uniform.

The question marks at LW defenseman and supporting Forwards in DeBrusk, Kase, Bjork, Studnika you have to wonder if the Bruins are taking advantage of their assets to set up their future while still staying competitive. Is it a conscious decision by Neely and Sweeney or did they strike out this off season and can they rebound to make the bold moves I believe to be necessary?
