Where’s Sweeney?
NHL Free Agency doesn’t technically start until noon today, but in the age of Twitter nothing is sacred. We have seen a pretty wild off season for the NHL that continues to pop off. Except in Boston. Mike Reilly is not exactly fire works. Yes, Sweeney locked up Carlo and Hallsey for under market deals. His specialty. We all know the biggest hole on this team was left shot defensemen. How many of these guys need to be taken off the table for Sleepy Sweeney wakes up?
Reports have leaked out that the Bruins were in on guys like Suter, OEL, Alec Martinez out of Vegas among others. Across the league Boston has been viewed as a destination for a lot of players so your mind has to go to cost when it comes to why the B’s lost out on these players.
Are we looking at another “Internal Cap” situation from Jacobs? This was the Simple Minds speculation last season and although they grabbed Taylor Hall at the deadline, it was pretty obvious they were not extending themselves much more than that financially.
Now, as we sit here with FA starting and upwards of $20 million to spend the Bruins seemingly are sitting on their hands while the rest of the league plays Russian Roulette with their assets.
This is an ideal FA situation for the Bruins. They have money to spend where a lot of other competitive teams do not in a market that is dealing out short money due to the Covid Cap situation. Sweeney needs to get aggressive and field a roster capable of competing as a top 8 team and beyond for the next 2 - 3 years. That or blow it up and collect assets. Enough fucking middling with the likes of Jake DeBrusk and Mike Reilly. Bring in some guys that know how to win and compete. And for the love of god find Charlie McAvoy and running mate. Some one smash the alarm clock over on Causeway. These boys are sleeping on the job!
