The World Series is a Scherzer away
The MLB Trade deadline is Friday and the Sox are in the mix on a couple roster altering players. The biggest surprise is the push for Nats starter Max Scherzer in the last couple days. If the Sox could some how pull this off it would catapult them into World Series favorite category with Chris Sale coming back and the way this team has played this year. Lets not get our hopes up though. Max can play any hand he wants here with 10 to 5 rights (10 years in the majors and five consecutive with one team). He has said he wants to play for a team that can compete now and in the future which the Red Sox qualify for. He also said he wants to head to the West Coast. Strike 1 for Chaim Bloom.
Then it comes down to the money and compensation. The Red Sox main competitors are the Padres, Dodgers, and Giants. We know the Dodgers are not afraid of the pay check. They are currently the only team in the MLB over the luxury tax and they are over by $17 million. The Padres are literally paying their infield 1/2 billion dollars so it’s safe to say they will spend. Will John Henry bust out the check book? Strike 2 Chaim.
All three of the West Coast teams land in the top 15 of minor league farm systems. (SOURCE Padres 6. Giants 11. Dodgers 14) The Red Sox come in at 24. So, yea unless Max has a sudden hankering for some clam chowder and rampant binge drinking I’m not seeing him in a Red Sox jersey. Strike 3.
Anthony Rizzo is really who we want to keep our eyes on isn’t he? Sox and Cubs have been reported to be in talks for a while now. He fits a couple needs. Left handed bat not being the least of them. But, the Red Sox defense at 1st base ranks at the bottom of the league. Rizzo is a gold glove caliber defender built for the bright lights. You can probably get him for a little less than what the Rays spent to get Nelson Cruz. So a couple of prospects. One top 15 and probably one top 10. Call it Thadius Ward- RHP and Brainer Bonaci- SS. Chaim Bloom can afford that.
You still need to bring in help on the mound in both Starting pitching and Relieving roles. Bloom is not going to gut the system he was brought in to rebuild with the first chance he gets. I fully expect these pitching needs to be addressed with lesser names. The likes of Martin Perez or Nick Pivetta caliber. I called up the nerds to rattle off some options from the bottom of 40 man rosters. I’ll get back to ya.
That may put a lot of pressure on Chris Sale, but so be it. The 2021 Red Sox are playing above there heads with a bit of house money. They rightfully have identified a realistic shot at taking a run to the World Series and should try to maximize that aggressively at the deadline, but not forfeit your future ala Dave Dombrowski. You are the Boston Red Sox. You can do both.
Here’s your path. Take on a shitty contract in exchange for lesser prospects to get the guy you want. Hmm. Maybe toss a ton of money at the Nats and that deferred payment plan? Boom. We are back in on Max! Write the Luxury tax checks John. The fine folk of Liverpool hate you anyway time to reinvest in Boston.
