Where does this Bruins season rank in Boston sports failures
Most wins and most points in NHL history, presidents trophy winner, and bounced in the first round by the 8th seed Florida Panthers. The season never had any hiccups and everyone thought the Cup was the Bruins for the taking. Winning one more for Bergy seemed like the fight cry for this team and after the game 7 loss it seems like this is it for the captain. But with all the accolades this season where does this season rank for all time choke jobs in Boston sports?
The 1986 World Series saw the New York Mets taking on the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox were still suffering from the curse of the Bambino and hadn’t won since 1918. That was all looking to change in 86, up 3 games to 2 and wining game 6, the Red Sox were looking to win in New York until on of the most infamous plays in World Series History. Bill Buckners era would tie to the game and the Sox would lose game 6 and then game 7. Up 3-2 and losing 2 in a row at least the Red Sox made it to the World Series. Yes they lost in embarrassing fashion but still made it.
In 86 I was just a 1 year old but in 2010 I remember where I was watching this game and the anger that I had. The Celtics were up looking to beat the Lakers once again in the Finals. Once again a Boston team was up 3 games to 2 and looking to clinch the game until something big happened. That something big was Kendrick Perkins going down in game 6.
The Celtics would lose game 6 89-67 and have no answer for game 7 as Perkins was out for that game as well. But again, the Celtics made it to the championship game and an injury stopped them from the ultimate goal. The Bruins defeat is ahead of this one.
So far my rankings would be the 86 Red Sox, 2010 Celtics, 2023 Bruins because no team in Boston sports history is worse than this team.
The 2007 New England Patriots, 16-0 regular season. Make it to the Super Bowl and have one of the most iconic catches in the history of the NFL, David Tyree’s helmet catch. This will always be the worst defeat in Boston sports history. This Bruins squad finishes a nice 2nd to 07 Patriots. So congrats at least you guys got 2nd in something this year, Bruins.
