What’s the deal with the JBJ deal?

I’ve taken the last couple days to try and wrap my head around it. My natural contradictory response was to take the opposite side of my co-host on The Simple Minds Sports Show and rightfully so because Bill’s an asshole. The more and more I think about it though the less and less I’m convinced. Why didn’t the Red Sox get something better for Hunter Renfroe?

Certainly they did not target JBJ. They wanted the prospects and the deal that was hashed out was a swap of outfielders which will inevitably cost Chaim Bloom $8 million for two mediocore prospects. It does feel like he could have gotten more for Renfore coming off a career year on a friendly contract. I think we have to put some blame on the lock out deadline. Perhaps with more time Bloom could have massaged the deal a bit more or even found a better suitor. Which begs the question, what was the rush? Did Alex Cora want Renfroe gone that badly? JBJ has a good relationship with Cora so that I’m sure made it an easier pill so swallow, but come on? Is this Alex Binelas worth the 2 years of infuriating plate discipline and overrated highlight reel catches?

Over all, gun to my head, the deal doesn’t make me that mad. JBJ will hit .230 with 14 HRs and 60 RBI’s while giving Cora immense defensive flexibility with him and Kike. The money is high, but as I’ve heard so many people say “You’re the Red Sox. Who gives a fuck about money!”. Rusney Castillo and Pablo Sandavol certainly didn’t matter. Oh, and Dustin Pedroia’s $16 million. They all were dead money as the Sox went on to win a world series. They can handle JBJ’s $12 million contract.

Plus, we’ve have bitched about the Red Sox not having a real direction under the Fenway Group for years. They buy a world series and then drop to last place. The roller coaster ride is not as fans what we expect. The Boston Red Sox have the resources to consistently be good and building so can we really get all bent out of shape with Chaim for shipping out a Hunter Renfroe in order to further boost a farm system and have to deal with a Gold Glove center fielder with albeit the statistically worst hitter in a generation?

Ya, I’m still torn.
