What if they don’t win the cup?

The Bruins are on pace for the greatest regular season in NHL history. David Pastrnak is projected to score 65 goals and 120 points. That would put him 4th all time behind Phil Esposito and ahead of Cam Neely 89-90. Doesn’t that scare the shit out of you?

They dropped one last night to Tampa. Big whoop. I aint poopin’ down my leg. However, we all know the competition and level of play is a different animal in the playoffs. We all know the tack record of these Bruins and the playoff underachievements. If you don’t, allow me to oblige:

The last two times the Bruins won president trophies:

2020 - 100 points. Covid year. They lost a ton of momentum that year then had to lock it down in the bubble. Tuuka quit due to “marital troubles” and mental fragility. Pasta fucked around at some roller rink in Charlestown and got covid or injured or both. Boom! Out in 2nd round.

2014 - 117 pts. 2nd round exit. game 7 Canadiens. Woof.

The last two shots at the cup?

2019 Stanley cup - lose game 7 at home

2013 Stanley cup - poop your pants game 6 at home

Now, allow me to remind you that the common denominator in these choke jobs was indeed the Quest for the Butthole tattoo, Tuukka Rask. Things are different now. Which would make it even worse if they lose.

Make no mistake about it. If the Boston Bruins do not win the Stanley Cup this year it’s a failure. Period. You can’t have this run of success with all the drama that surrounds them in the last ride with Bergy and lose. I mean they probably will, but they can’t. In fact, the last five times a team has broken the regular season win record they have failed to win the championship.

2015 - 2016 Warriors 73 - 9. Lost NBA Finals to Cavalieres

2014 - 2015 Kentucky Wild Cats 38 - 1. Lost in the semis to Wisconsin after starting 38-0.

2007 Patriots - The game that shall not be spoken of

2001 Mariners - 116 wins. Lost in ALCS to the Yankees

1995 - 1996 Red Wings - 62-13-7. Lost in the WCF in 6 games to the Avalanche

I don’t believe a failure to win the cup really changes the trajectory of this team, though. Krejci and Bergy are most likely gone. Sounds like there is a deal with Pasta in the works. You still have two top pairing defensemen. Marchand is still at the top of his game plus some forward depth and enough cap space to bring in a top Centerman. You’d think Sweeney would also make a move to sure up the roster at the deadline. All that being said it’s not going to be enough to get you back to this level of play. They will be a good team for years to come, but this year is something different. Something is in the water down there.

So, when you start to get excited about the Bruins and this year’s cup run just think of the latest 2019 collapse and how you felt? Multiply that by 10 and then cut your pinkies off because this one’s gunna hurt like a bitch!
