The newest broke athlete: Evander Kane

With the NHL season starting today I wanted to write something about the NHL. One of the biggest offseason stories that no one is talking about is how Evander Kane at 29 years old just filed for bankruptcy and owes his creditors $26.8 million dollars!

Evander Kane plays for the San Jose Sharks and is one of their star players. Just signing a 7 year $49 million dollar extension you would think the 29 year old would be doing alright for himself. Well, he probably is but supporting his sister(27), his uncle (54), another uncle (59) his mom(55), his dad (60), and his grandmother (77) plus owning 3 house that totals out to $10.2 million is what’s probably killing this guy. I get it support the ones you love and helped you but 3 houses at $3 million each is a little ridiculous.
In Evander’s 11 year NHL career he’s made $52.9 million. It’s all gone and now due to the bankruptcy he will be playing his contract paying off his debt to creditors. His biggest issue is Las Vegas where he opened up continuous lines of credit and has yet to pay off.
Seeing Evander fall into the category of Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Mike Vick and the countless others that made millions only to end up broke. The ESPN 30 for 30 broke is something that every rookie should watch when they make it in any league. Evander is the latest but sure as hell won’t be the last.
