The worst case scenario has come true
Alex Van Pelt will not last as the Patriots offensive coordinator. Now some of you may be saying good thank God, that old fat dump blows. Agreed. However, if we look back at the "how to ruin a young quarterback 101 playbook in which Belichick ran Mac Jones through right at the top of the To Do List would be giving young quarterbacks multiple offensive schemes to learn over his first couple years.
Drake May is staring directly into that reality. Alex Vanpelt is running an offense from the 80s and without unbelievable superior talent. Strike that. With remarkably uninspiring talent. It's not going to work. Elliot Wolf promised to weaponized the office and his idea of that was taking the 3rd best WR from Washington University with a second round pick. That and waiting for the 3rd QB to come off the board with the 3rd pick. Not exactly what I would call aggressive or forward thinking. This organization has been doing nothing but reacting for over a year. Once it was clear Belichick had rubbed that last person wrong it’s been chaos. But, chaos with no sense of urgency. Like they have all the answers and everything is going to work out just as it should, because we’re the Patriots and we shit gold. Newsflash fuck shticks. Tom Brady shit gold and Lombardi Trophies. You shit, shit. Like the rest of us.
The Patriots need to identify the fact that AVP was a lazy, uninspired, cheap hire immediately and either fire Van Pelt now or commit heavily into this old ass scheme up front and in the run game. Then pray to god Drake Maye has a set big enough to get us to relevancy. That in fact is probably the only change we have regardless of getting entertaining football. Drake Maye needs a sack big enough to stretch out across the entire region of New England and sail us out of oblivion.
We know it won’t be Jerod Mayo making that call. As my co-host, Dr. Big Mac, so astonishingly astutely put it when referring to Jerod Mayo and his power as head coach:
“He doesn’t have the keys to his own car. He has his dad’s keys who tells him where to get gas, where to get the oil change, and where to get it washed. But he drives it and thinks he’s the man. He is not.”
That is the only way May survives in New England. If they wait to fire AVP until the end of the season it will be a mistake. But, make no mistake AVP is getting fired. You can’t score 12 points a game with an offense from the 80’s and keep your job. They should can him now and move forward with McAdoo and some young whippersnappers who know the latest Drake song or whatever. (I’m old). When they do inevitably move on from AVP at the end of the season a path forward could be snatching a staffer from the Shannahan tree. Kyle Shannahan’s offense is based off the same west coast principles as AVP’s. AVP is just running it the same way Mike Shannahan ran it. If they can actually shell out some money for a young OC from a system the speaks the same language under the same principles maybe you diminish the amount of back tracking Drake Maye has to do as a 2nd year pro.
More likely, though they keep AVP and the whole “brain trust” down there and blame the 1 win season on injuries. It was a good learning experience and expectation are high again for 2025.
