The Bruins killed their erection and that’s fine

Coming out of the NHL Covid break Cassidy finally pulled the trigger on breaking up Marchand, Bergeron, and Pasternak. Thank god. We here at Simple Minds Sports have been calling for this for years. Frankly we’ve been calling for the break up of this team for years, but that’s a story for another day.

In these past two games the Bruins have 8 5v5 goals. That’s the most all season and I’m pretty sure the most in a two game stretch in a decade. Of course the “erection line” is amazing, one of the best in the league, blah, blah, blah. The problem is for years this team has been completely reliant on the 1st line. It has made them predictable and easy to defend in the playoffs resulting in early exits.

In the 2019 Stanley Cup run the Bergeron line was intact, but you had production elsewhere. Coyle and Johanson were cooking. If you don’t have that you’re cooked. Taylor Hall was supposed to solve that issue, but that clearly ‘aint working out. Not sure if it’s just in this guy’s DNA to wildly underachieve or if it’s more about the absence of Krejci. Either way the Bruins owe it to themselves to try and get this guy going and the need him. If that means opening up some lanes by throwing Pasta on the RW and a speeding C then you have to pull the trigger. I’m really not sure why there is so much hesitation from Cassidy and the staff to do it over the years.

Secondly, I really like Craig Smith on Bergeron’s RW. It’s what got him going last season and he needs it again this year with only 2 goals in 19 games. As Craig Smith goes the Bruins go. In games that Smith has recorded point, the Bruins have gone 22-4-1. In games that he hasn’t recorded a point, the Bruins have gone 22-17-8. Cleary Smith clicks with Bergy and and Marchand. I think that record really shows you what a 2nd line can do for this team. Giving Smith this opportunity of course means dropping Pasternak down Ah, yes Pasternak.

It’s time for this guy to start lifting up his teammates. If he is as good as I’ve been told he is he shouldn’t need his line mates to be two of the best forwards in hockey. Isn’t it time for him to have his “own” line? I look at the Oilers and how they deploy McDavid and Draisaitle. Not comparing two of the best players in the NHL to Pasternak, but the idea that you automatically give your team 2 lines because of the talent of one individual is appealing. Pasternak should be given the opportunity to be that guy. And really if Hall wakes up he should be “that guy” too. Lastly, you are able to put Coyle in his natural position as a 3rd line Center which improves that line too.

In a season that doesn’t show a lot of promise getting these two lines producing at their highest level could elevate our expectations. I just plead with Cassidy that if he gets these guys rolling not to revert back to his hockey viagra.
