Prime Time Changing the College Landscape
We can admit things, we don’t pretend to follow college football. We don’t have a team since New England’s best hope is Boston College and they are the doormat of the ACC. When Saturday comes rolling along in the fall whatever CBS or Fox has to show me for games I will throw it on. But recently something has grabbed my attention from the world of College football.
Deion Sanders was an electric football player. From his days at Florida State and being a two sport athlete playing MLB and the NFL. Only Bo Jackson and Deion were the two that come to mind when you talk about duel athletes in the pro ranks. After finishing his career he did the broadcasting gig and then when that got old he went to Barstool Sports which how did El Pres afford that contract? But his newest venture is the head coach of Jackson State University. If you have never heard of this school, join the club. Jackson State is in the NCAA Division 1 which is the subdivision of the FCS. Located in Jackson, Mississippi they hold an all time record of 411-336-22 and a member of the SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference).
This is Deion’s first head coaching gig ever, and with a record of 15-5 he isn’t doing to bad at all. But what he is doing is changing the landscape of college football. As any football fan knows, the SEC is the dominant conference to go to if you want to play at the next level. They almost always get the top recruits because their pitches usually is, play with us on Saturdays so we can make you big money to play on Sundays. Plus the training facilities, warm weather and being treated like a god on campus is a huge perk as well. Deion Sanders said fuck all of that. He is taking a school that gets zero exposure on the big networks, has their championship game broadcasted on ESPN 2, and is stealing top recruits to come play for him.
Travis Hunter is the number 1 recruit out of high school and a 5 star recruit and the best cornerback in the country. With offers from Florida State, Alabama, Auburn, and Clemson he chose to go play for JSU. Mind blowing that he can pull this off. Maybe that was a fluke, NOPE! Kevin Coleman ranked 44 overall in the nation and the number 4 ranked wide receiver in the country with offers from Florida State, Miami, Oregon, and USC he chose JSU. Deion Sanders had no head coaching experience when he went to JSU, in his 2nd year he is getting top ranked recruits to come play for him in a small subdivision football confernce. Watch out when a big school comes and gets him because he will change the way recruiting is done in the next 5 years.
