Give me McDaniels
I like Josh McDaniels . He’ s good with QBs too. Vrabel's knock seems to be he's an asshole. Josh knows how to deal with an asshole head coach. What I don’t think will work here is some pip squeak 30 year old nerd that is just gunna piss his pants and piss Vrabel off then jet at the first sign of greener pastures.
Many will say McDaniels only had success with Brady. That is just false. McDaniels got more out of Cam Newton than many thought. That dude was out of the league when Belichick picked him off the trash heap.
Mac Jones’ rookie season, the Patriots were 6th in the league in scoring with that putz Jones at QB. That performance also got McDaniels another shot at a head coaching job. And probably his last, which is another reason to like him. If you’re one of these people who are afraid of Drake Maye having too many play books to learn, Josh McDaniels presents as a lifetime OC. Also, while we are on the subject I dont totally disagree it’s bad to run too many play books at a young QB, but at a certain point its the QB calling the shots anyway. If by year 4 we are blaming play books on Maye throwing game ending INTs in OT we’ve got bigger problems on our hands.
My question is who do you want if not a guy as established as McDaniels? You want another shmuck who's never called a game before? I just feel like they need as much experience as possible. No more learning on the job.
Ben Johnson and Nick Caley may be great, but I’ll take the high floor of Vrabel and McDaniels when you are the worst team in the league. There is no room for error when it comes to development of your team and program. I just want experience across the board. You can talk to me about Mike McCarthy or Doug Peterson, even. I’ll allow the particulars to be decided by the pros. But, for the same reason I was against Ben Johnson as a rookie head coach, I’m against a rookie OC.
Bring in coaches who have done it before then hire a bunch of young assistants to grow with your program like Belichick did early on after Romeo Crennel and Charlie Wise left. At some point Belichick stopped developing coaches and started becoming insulated like the paranoid freak he has become.
Vrabel and McDaniels give the Patriots an excellent chance to bring the franshise out from the gutter as fast or faster than any other option out there.
