5th Place Boston Red Sox - Decent, Bad, and Ugly
Man. Lucas Giolito “might need Tommy-John surgery”. Well, I think you can say WILL NEED, the surgery meaning 2025 the Red Sox MAYBE get 10 starts if lucky. I think it’s closer to 5 starts. But let’s move on.
With Jordan Montgomery talks at a stalemate (Scott Boras , it’s not looking good) this team has Bello as most likely the opening day starter and then a crap shoot in pitching outside maybe two guys in the bullpen pending how you review Pivetta and Whitlock.
Decent -
Brayan Bello signed an extension! 6 years 5t million dollars which is team friendly and doesn’t get arbitration involved at all. Good for all sides.
His ceiling his 2017-2018 Luis Severino. Some mechanics and experience needed, but he’s the guy. Their #1. Might one day be an ace. With his floor being the #3 starter in the rotation. Which unless there is serious injury, just like every pitcher is pretty solid. All the signs are there.
Bad - From insiders and players, they are expecting last place. Ouch! Even Devers said to the press, “They know what we need.”
Indeed. Pitching. Pitching. PITCHING!
Ugly - Fans are calling for the Fenway Sports Group to sell the team! What!?
Yes. This is the Boston Red Sox. They have cap space. They know what they need. Where’s the direction? Why tank and add star power in players like Yoshida? You didn’t your core middle infielder and didn’t use the money on upgrades.
There is no clear direction on this team and it shows. Why is this team not playing competitive baseball? It’s inexcusable. It’s frustrating. It’s beyond ugly.
The 2010s had direction. And when they were in the pit, they rebuilt for a little and the goal was to endure pain for a little and get back to up top.
2020s was to not re-sign players, raise ticket prices, cry poverty, and outside the run in 2021, it has been in the tank. 5th place, 5th place, and after an off-season where players were available and trades uneventful, the ceiling is 4th place pending what team gets hurt the most.
This is disgraceful. A long and disappointing summer ahead and it’s no wonder why fans want a new owner. Because this group of owners care more about Liverpool than they do the Red Sox. Pain!
