Lets check in on Patriots offseason moves

Last off season, Bill Belichick and the Patriots spent $250 million dollars revamping this roster. After failed drafts and previous free agents it needed a face lift. With a third of the season over with lets check in to see how they are panning out.

Let us start with the prize tight end combo of Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith. Both men were the golden gooses that we thought would help revive this Patriots offense. Hunter Henry was suppose to be a redzone threat while Jonnu was going to be that dynamic factor that Josh could put him anywhere. So lets check in on some stats shall we.

Hunter Henry - 22 receptions 241 yards 11.0 average 3 TDs

Jonnu Smith - 16 receptions 124 yards 7.8 average 1 TD

Combining for almost $90 million dollars these two have not lived up to the money or the hype, here is to them turning it on the rest of the way. Both of these guys would get a C- so far for the season.

Staying on offense we have Kendrick Bourne and Nelson Agholor. Both men are not pro bowl players like the above mentioned were, instead they were pieces that again thought could bring back and help the QB moving open up the field. Bourne was a possession receiver while Agholor was that deep threat we haven’t had in a few season. As of today going into week 7 Bourne is the better signing out of the two with some big time plays while it feels Agholor is going back to his days in Philly with big drops but lets check out the stats.

Kendrick Bourne - 18 receptions 282 yards 15.7 average 2 TDs

Nelson Agholor - 17 receptions 224 yards 13.2 average 1 TD

Agholor has been a disappointment so far, lots of drops and only averaging 13 yards per catch isn’t what he was brought in for. Is this totally on him? No, the play calling hasn’t been letting him open it up and jet down the field, however he has had a few opportunities to go long and hasn’t converted. For Agholor I would give him a C so far this season.

Bourne has been the bright spot on offense, catching key balls late in to games and having great chemistry with Mac. His deal wasn’t a big one, 3 years $15 million. Bourne is over playing his salary and a B grade is fair. Moving forward Myers and Bourne could be a deadly 1- 2 punch for Mac Jones.

The highest paid free agent that came in last offseason at $56 million dollars, Matthew Judon. Coming from a great defense like Baltimore he had chance to be good in this system, well he is GREAT. In my opinion the best player we picked up and a game changer for that defense. He is a fan favorite and without him I feel this defense would be letting up 400 plus yards every week.

Matthew Judon - 6.5 sacks 26 total tackles 1 Fumble recovery

He does stuff on the field that doesn’t end up the stat sheet. He works extremely well in Bill Belichicks system to a point where I think he is the Patriots MVP in the first third of the season. I give him an A so far, a man living up to his contract and hype, you got to love that.

Now, this grade and stats will all be skewed. Jalen Mills was not brought here to be our number 2 corner back. He did sign a big contract, 4 years $24 million. I believe he was brought in to be the replacement eventually for Devin McCourty not the replacement for Stephon Gilmore.

Jalen Mills - 20 total tackles 1 pass deflection …. that is it.

Jalen Mills is the guy the opposing QB’s pick on when he is in. He is a terrible corner back and doesn’t fit the system. I will give him a D with an * just because he wasn’t brought here for the role that he is in now.

The last player is Kyle Van Noy and lets be honest, if he wasn’t in all those Dunkin Doughnuts commercials would you know he played for the Patriots? Being injured with a throat injury ( insert a Bill’s mom joke here) he hasn’t been on the field much. Coming back we thought we would see the boogey men 3.0 recreated but its been more like Hot Dogs in a Hallway the way this defense leaves lanes open for every RB to destroy.

Kyle Van Noy - 15 tackles 1 sack 1 fumble recovery

Kyle has been getting better throughout the season and his contract isn’t insane 2 years $12 million. Just need to see more out of a player that has been in this system before and bring back that scary defense with the Boogey Men. Giving Van Noy a C for right now would be fair in my opinion, he has been an average player.

I don’t think the team nor the fans would have thought after 6 weeks we would be in the position we are in right now. 2-4 wasn’t on anyone’s radar. For the first 6 weeks this team has been a C- type team. Is it because of all the new players in rolls they have never been before? If that is the case the next 12 weeks should be interesting and hopefully filled with happy beers for Patriots fans.
