Let the meddling begin
Bill Belichick couldn’t get out of his own way in 2023. Dr. Big Mac touched on this in his blog https://www.simplemindssports.com/blogs/the-dysfunctional-duo so this is more of a venting session/ stream of frustrated concentration.
Of course it all started with his inexplainable decision to bring in Matt Patricia and Joe Judge to run his offense. An Offense that was completely turned on its head and then basically scrapped. Frankly, the team never recovered from it. It caused the trickle down effect that inevitable did them in. Sloppy, undisciplined, inconsistent play.
Welp, in addition to all of us fans we know that Robert Kraft has seen enough. Mr. Kraft prior to week 18 sent a letter to his season ticket holders promising major changes next year. He went as far as to call out the offensive leadership when it comes to those changes.
At the beginning of the year Kraft basically said Belichick earned the right to make this asshole decision to put Skinny Ray in charge of the offense, but the results will speak for themselves. The result he was looking for was a year 2 jump in his 1st round QB and a play-off win. Fail. Faill.
Now what? Meddling. That’s what. Bill has forced Robert’s hand. Wouldn’t you love to be a fly on the wall in that exit interview? We know there are reports about Bill O’Brien coming in to run the offense. And I mean run it. A whole new staff, concept, hierarchy. Many are not convinced Bill can handle that. Some are not convinced Belichick will even be back next year even after confirming he will be returning for his 24th season as Patriots head coach.
Bottom line the 2023 Patriots are still better off with Bill as head coach, but he clearly has taken his foot off the gas pedal. He attempted to put into place a succession plan purely out of narcism so he could take a step back and it has blown up in his face. Now, Kraft needs to Garrapolo his head coach as Bill did with Brady. O’Brien or another established offensive coach needs to come in here and push Belichick. They need to tap into Mac Jones and simply be a functional offense. If you had a functional offense this year a playoff win would have been the minimum level of success.
It’s hard for me to believe Coach Belichick is going to implement that level of pressure on himself voluntarily at this point in his career. Ownership needs to step in. Bad news is that kind of meddling generally does not work out. Maybe, hopefully, the greatest coach of all time can take a slice of humble pie for the betterment of the franchise as he cements his legacy on a high note.
