Dr. BigMac’s Top 5 - Sports Video Games
The dog day’s of summer are here. As a big boned gentlemen, I sometimes would rather be in a very cool room rather than being outside getting destroyed by the sun. During these hot days I like to play videogames for hours until darkness falls upon me. Here is my list of the greatest sports video games of all time.
5. NBA Jam (93)
From debuting in arcades to then being able to bring it home, where ever, when ever I could play this game, I would. The game is simple with simple button functions, steal, block, shoot/dunk, and turbo. You had the 2 best players from all NBA teams and the commentator had some of the absolute best catch phrases: Boom shakala, Heating up, he’s on fire, from downtown, and razzle dazzle! This is game you can not get bored playing. Instead you could get absolutely frustrated, slam your controller down, pick it back up and dive back in. It’s called NBA Jam but my team was not one that would Jam at all.
Give me Reggie Miller and Detla Schrempf from outside all day. The original splash brothers.
4. WWF No Mercy for N64.
I’ve played all the wrestling games from Royal Rumble on Super Nintendo to all the Smackdown games and nothing will ever compare to WWF No Mercy. THQ knew how to make a wrestling game. The graphics were the best of it’s time, the roster was the biggest ever at the time, and the way you could throw a DX shirt on The Rock and change his entrance music to DX, well Jesus Christ you have hours right there of rebranding the roster to how you want and create stables that you think would have worked at the time. Tickle me pink and slap my belly that’s good old fashion fun.
The Championship mode it had where you take a wrestler through a year of PPV’s ending at WrestleMania 2000. This was simply incredible and the easy buttons made it so you didn’t have to hit 7 buttons mind numbing combo to do a signature move. I wish they would make this available on my sons switch cause I would immediately steal and drop $59.99 with no remorse.
3. The Madden Franchise.
I won’t be picking out a specific year,. I am just going to put the whole franchise as a whole for this one. John Madden made a game back in 1990, 31 years later the game is as popular as ever and one of the best sports games on the market. If you ask kids now a days who is Madden they are not going to mention his Hall of Fame coaching career. Instead, they think of him as a best selling football game. I still buy this every year, the new functions to the new franchise modes, to being a GM from August to February, it doesn’t get old. The only problem was always picking the Patriots and then after winning the Super Bowl they made Brady retire. So I would always pick a shitty team to become the GM of and see how far I could go until I was fired. In closing; looking at these two cunts on the cover I hope the Madden Curse makes a comeback this year.
2. Tony Haw Pro Skater 2.
Could I skate board? Nope. Did I want to after playing this game? Nope. Did I spend hours playing this game in my bedroom listening to an amazing soundtrack hitting the kickflip button non stop? Yup! I had no desire to skateboard or be apart of that crowd, but being able to be Tony Hawk and do these tricks in the game was huge. From the combo's you could pull off to the different spots you could skate just made you want to play non stop. Especially the different tasks you had to do to unlock other parks. This game is a controller throwing game for sure. You’d get so frustrated trying 100 times to land the perfect combo. Hours at the same level just trying to do that 1 trick to get you the points was soooooo frustrating, but when you completed it was the most satisfying feeling. (this was before sex and beet). This is such a popular game that PS5 is bringing it back with new graphics and stages. Hopefully the game makers don’t cater to the younger pussies and make it Gen Z easy. It needs to bring a new generation into the frustration that was hitting that 900.
1.Punch-Out!!
They say you can never forget your first, and for me it’s Punch-Out. Let me paint a picture for you. It’s 1989 I am in my living room with a shag carpet, a box TV, and I’m in my ultimate warrior pajamas. The NES is plugged in, I am sitting on my knees, the game I am playing is Punch-Out. You control Lil Mac, a small ass boxer who is going against guys 5 times his size, with Doc Louis training you. You start your career fighting in the lower ranks and the object is to go through and face Mike Tyson for the Heavy Weight title. Each character you face has different hit spots all the way up to Tyson. Glass Joe, Don Flemenco, King Hippo are some of the best characters you could take on before getting to Tyson. This is my first and forever will be the very best in my opinion.
