Is Bill desperate?

Say what you want about Bill and the way he has built the team the past several years has to put himself in this position. His drafts have been bad. His signings have not worked out, not remotely in the least Cam Newton. 2020 was a fall on your face disgusting performance the year after you let the Greatest Professional athlete of all time walk out the door. Truly embracing. So, was Bill forced into this position? Yes. Is he desperately filling holes in his roster via free agency with some of the best options available? Ya pretty much. Why is that a bad thing?

Well, history shows us that most teams who “win” free agency do not result in winning anything of consequence. Here are the highest spenders in free agency the past 5 seasons and there final season results.

2021 NE $250M * ?

2020 MIA $147M No playoffs

2019 NYJ $131M No play offs

2016 NYG $107M L, WCard

2018 CHI $102M L, WCard

2018 NYJ $101M No playoffs

Here are their record the previous seasons

2020 NE - 7-9

2019 MIA - 5-11

2018 NYJ - 4-12

2015 NYG - 6-10

2017 CHI - 5-11

2017 NYJ - 5-11

So you can look at these teams in the Bears, Giants, and Miami as teams who significantly improved their team through free agency, but ultimately fell short. And any list that includes the Jets is bound to drag the mean below the average level of suck. To me the bares out well for the Patriots in 2021. Why? Because the Giants, Dolphins, and Bears did not have Bill Belichick.

So, sure Belichick put himself in this position but he is also getting himself out of it. Here’s that squid Bill Polian on the matter. Source

"This (start to free agency) strikes me as pure Bill Belichick," said Polian. "You've got problems all over the place. Which clearly he identified. He didn’t say much about it publicly, but clearly he identified. Just go move and fix them. And be aggressive.

"He’s not gonna tolerate the kind of season that he had last year," said Polian. "And more power to him. I think it’s great."

Thanks Mr. Polian. What’s not shown here is old Bill uncontrollably crying into his cheerios about Ty Law being a bully.

I just look at this “Splurge” as a big jump start to the roster that “desperately” needed it. These moves in a vacuum can not and will not result in a Lombardi trophy. This year or even next. What it does is allows the Patriots to be competitive as you continue to restock your system hopefully through better draft picks, but also through classic Belichick devalued asset guys. If it took one year of 7 - 9 to get $69 (nice) million is space to go sign the high end guys, I’m for it. If you want to extend that logic to 2019 and it was a factor in losing Tom Brady, well not so much. Se la vie.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Welp! Bill Splurged all over the NFL’s chest and now Super Bowl, Back on! Call your boat guy, Bill

P.S. Drop the Cam Newton Experiment or all of this is bull shit.
