And the Patriots ‘aint done yet

I’m grinning like a little school girl as I write this. Tomorrow is Saint Patrick’s day. A year ago tomorrow Tom Brady left the New England Patriots for the garbage pile of the league and the entire world came crumbling down, literally.

As a Patriots fan we have lived in obscurity for a year. A haze of insecurities, doubt, and just sadness. It was over. Dynasty caput. We watched as Brady won his 7th Super Bowl and Cam freaking Newton barley scraped together 7 touchdowns never mind 7 wins. The Bruins have sucked, the Celtics are trivial children, and baseball is dead to me. Things were dire. But, how dare I? How dare I not believe in Bill Belichick?

Shouldn’t we have known there was burning desire of hate, frustration, and need to shove the collective ass of every media member and fan that doubted him for letting Brady go right down their throats? Low and behold the 1st day of NFL Free Agency the Patriots spend over $200 Million in contracts and re build the faith across the greater New England landscape. There are day boners galore stretching Russell Athletic sweat pants at the desks of home offices from Water Town to Moosehead.

As the euphoria falls out of my lips onto the key board at 11:30 am Tuesday Morning, reports are that the Patriots are not done with all speculation revolving around an upgrade at QB. Which is no small thing.

It’s no secret, my distaste for Cam Newton as a QB. Especially after last season I just can’t see how he can be defended as a starting QB in the NFL. Yes, sure with this type of supporting cast he should improve marginally, but he is not making the big throw when you need it and that’s what matters. He is not the difference maker you need at the most important position in sports. Never mind the fact that there is still a good chance he could outright blow. Right now as currently constituted if you improve your QB position even to a top 10 maybe top 15 guy (Jimmy G is the obvious name here) you are a Super Bowl contender with Belichick at the helm. And dare we get crazy and start thinking bigger? Are the Deshawn Watson rumors more fire than smoke? It would be wildly out of character for the Patriots and a monumental logistical blockbuster. But have the past 24 hours allowed us to dream boner that big? Hey Why not,

In the mold of “they ‘aint done” you still have some important guys that need decisions on. David Andrews is the big one, JC Jackson, Stephon Gilmore, and Lawrence Guy are all important players that I’m sure they would love to have back.

The last thing I will say about this flurry of slurry is the track record of compiling super teams in the NFL isn’t great. Please note the RedSkins of the early 2000’s. But, looking at the signings I don’t have that fear. Call me a homer, but the positions they spent at and the players themselves feel like they slide right into the system and molds that the Patriots have excelled in for years.

Now take a minute, print out several head shots of the newest members of your team, remove the Russell Athletics, and roll naked in bed with thoughts of skinny posts and blistering stunts and no remorse.
