Bloom 2.0?
If I hear how the Red Sox are “In” on someone one more time with out a significant move being made, I’m gunna snap.
In the wake of the explosive decision to trade Verdugo to the “super bitter rival” New York Yankees for a bucket of washed up no good balls, the same embattled rival trades for arguably a top 5 player in the game, Juan Soto. The Red Sox response? “We’re going to get the consolation prize pitcher from Japan and bring the team to Dave and Busters.”
Having had a quiet offseason so far, the Boston Red Sox are keeping an eye on Japanese pitcher Shōta Imanaga.
The Athletic's Will Sammon reported on Wednesday that seven teams are still in the bidding for Yamamoto. The Red Sox weren't among the clubs named in the report, but it was noted there are two "unidentified" teams.
The New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays were the teams identified by Sammon.
Imanaga isn't the same caliber of pitcher as Yamamoto, but he's better than a consolation prize for a team that doesn't get Yamamoto. SOURCE
Sure, that says Imanaga is more than a consultation prize, but not if you are the 2024 Red Sox. A team that not only needs multiple front end pitching, but also needs to make a major splash and show it’s fan base they are willing to invest and commit in big name and big ticketed players again.
This off season and Breslow era has Chaim Bloom 2.0 written all over it. The Verdugo trade moved an every day outfielder for 3 no name pitchers with “upside”. I’ve seen this story before. Bloom’s first move was getting donkey punched by the Dodger in the trade the brought Verdugo to Boston as the center piece for Mookie freaking Betts. Then, one of Bloom’s first “big” moves was trading Andrew Benintendi for 3 pitchers with upside. It’s literally the same play book. Bloom talked about getting better from with in via the farm system. Breslow has Cora talking about getting better from with in by establishing culture.
“One of the things that we have to do in spring training is compete,” said Cora. “You’ll see it. You might see a big group in the bowling alley, or Top Golf. Or in the escape rooms. We’re going to compete the whole time. That’s something we haven’t been great at the last two years. SOURCE
ESCAPE ROOMS?!?!? WHAT THE FUCK ARE WE TALKING ABOUT??!
In short what Alex Cora is saying is John Henry will not spend top dollar for players. Additionally, the last nerd couldn’t identify talent to compete with a smaller budget so we brought in another nerd to give it a try. He thinks we should play board games together and it should improve our infield defense. What a joke this team and franchise is.
Go ahead. Tell me all about the plans to sign these amazing players. The Red Sox have lost all rights to trust from the fan base. It’s a believe it when I see it game now. Even then, blow me John Henry. Go buy another Hockey team you whispering putz. It would be more digestible if they were just up front about it instead of filling their stupid mouths with this fantasy land bullshit. Or better yet, actually be good at your job and bring in cheap untapped talent so they could, oh ya know, “compete”.
