Belichick Never lost his Fastball
It’s funny how a narrative can change so quickly. It’s been said by many people and it’s very true. America loves a story that props people up and they love a story that drags them down even more. Here we have the redemption story of Mr. Bill Belichick. All of these squids in the national media tugging at the coat tails of the king. Digging and digging for scandals and infighting just to put a chink in the armor. Really all it took was for Belichick to shoot himself in the foot. Of course I’m talking about letting Brady walk. I’m of the mind that the split was even more Brady than Bill, but that’s another story for another day.
But, just 1 year later those some national media spoons are calling this the best coaching job in Belichick’s history. Which of course is ridiculous. I give you 2011, 2006 as under manned teams or 2003 - 2004 the last team to win back to back Super Bowls. None the less, Bill certainly has this 2021 team heating up. The top defense in the league and an offense led by a rookie quarterback catching their stride. Currently the Patriots sit 3rd in the AFC after started 2 - 4. Rightfully so Belichick should be getting the praise that he is. But, I would argue last year’s 7 - 9 record was not evidence as a coach who lost a step, rather an example of making chicken soup out of chicken shit.
That roster had no business being in play off contention at all never mind a .500 record come Week 12. Cam Newton threw 8 fucking TDs. EIGHT! Their number 1 receiver was an un-drafted kid who had most recently been thrown aside by the GOAT. They had the most opt outs in the league including a defensive captain in Hightower plus an injury to Edelman early in the season. I mean there were times last season you couldn’t name half the roster. Yet, they were a Cam Newton goal line fumble and a goal line conversion away from 9-7. It may. have looked like watching Concrete dry with that high school offense at times, but any other coach would have been fighting the Jags and Jets for number one over all.
Sure, Bill the GM screwed Bill the coach a little bit in the previous seasons, but 2021 is shaping up as a redemption year for GM Bill. And the coach’s heater stays true. He’s just tweaked some secondary pitches.
P.S. Did I forget to mention they won the freaking SuperBowl THREE years ago?
