Aaron Glenn Declining the Patriots is a Big Deal
Many have stated that the New England Patriots head coaching vacancy is the most desirable position out of all the openings. So when the Patriots started to have interviews with….. Byron Leftwich (hasn’t coached in 2 years), and Pep Hamilton (last coached in the XFL), you knew exactly what Robert Kraft and company were doing. They were checking the Rooney Rule box. Thats it, these guys arent on anyone’s radar or top of any coaching list. So when Aaron Glenn was asked to come in to the Patriots he gave them the double bird and said, “Go fuck yourself!”-allegedly.
Robert Kraft is doing what we all wanted him to do, go through the process, find out who is the best candidate for the job and now have some sort of folder where you can tuck away and have notes on top candidates like, Ben Johnson. Pick their brains, let them pick yours, find out what kind of team in this pass first NFL needs and how to adapt. Robert Kraft hasn’t had to interview anyone for a head coaching job in 20 plus years and even then it was a weird situation since he signed with the Jets to quit on a napkin and come to Foxborough.
Aaron Glenn is a top candidate who should be a head coach on an NFL sideline next season. He took a defensive roster that has injuries all over the place and still made them dominant and help the Lions get the number 1 seed in the NFC. With him saying no thanks to Kraft and company, it shows that he doesn’t want to waste his time coming here and is that because he doesn’t want to be another minority coach coming over for the Patriots to check off? Is it because the worst kept secret in the NFL is that its Vrabel’s job to lose? Or, is it because this franchise has fallen so far down the ranks that he knows that it can not be fixed and will take a miracle to make the Patriots a great program again? I think it’s C, and once again Kraft and company are not doing the right thing. Johnson, Vrabel, and Glenn all should have been here for interviews and no one should be at the top of the list until you hear what they have to say. Stop trying to feel comfortable with the guys that have been here. If Aaron Glenn has an idea and formula to make this defense a top 5 again, bring in an offensive coordinator that will help Drake Maye in year 2 and beyond then you need to hear that. Instead, you just lost out on that because you want Mike Vrable.
