A Patriots wish List
The NFL trade deadline is today. There have already been some big names off the board. Von Miller to the Rams and Melvin Ingram to the Chiefs. Lets take a snap shot at the Patriots needs and whose available.
#1 Need. Corner back
They were thin at this position to start the year. The Gilmore trade and Jonathan Jones injury did not help. Jalen Mills has unfortunately proven he is just not a full time #2 CB in the NFL. Myles Bryant, JoeJuan Williams, and Michael Jackson Hee hee are certainly not. The Patriots brought in the corpse of Brian Poole to the practice squad, but for this team to make a move in the playoffs they need help. Who’s available?
The Pipe Dream: Xavein Howard - Miami Dolphins.
Howard is 28 years old with 2 years of control on his contract at a $14 million cap hit. He was disgruntled with Miami before the season and now they are 1 - 7. How could he possibly want to stay there. Von Miller set this trade market with a 2nd and 3rd round pick, but the Broncos ate the money. I have to think Howard would be a similar deal. It’s not something I see the Pats doing and they would have to move money to do it. Plus would the Dolphins ship their franchise CB in the division? Probably not.
The realistic Dream: Kyle Fuller - Denver Broncos
Fuller signed a one year prove it deal with the Broncos and has found himself on the bench. The 29 year old is a former 1st round pick who has fallen out of favor and needs a reclamation landing spot. He’s owed a $9.4 million salary this season then comes off the books. The asking price at best should be a mid round pick, plus with the Patriots $4.3 million in cap space they may want to send a player back to clear a little space. Make this guy your 2021 Aquib Talib Bill!
#2 Need. Offensive Tackle depth
Belichick finally listened to Billy Bad words and slid Onwenu over to right tackle and we have seen an immediate impact. However, you are one injury away from that siv Herron back there or the under developed and limited Cajuste. Let’s all stop pretending Trent Brown is coming back from the world’s worst calf strain.
THE Guy: Andre Dillard - Philadelphia Eagles
Dillard lost the LT spot in Philadelphia to Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson is getting paid the next few seasons, the 26 year old is in reserve duty. He is a former 1st round pick. The asking price is somewhere around a late 3rd. If I’m the Patriots I’m looking toward the future at my LT spot. Isaih Wynn has been pretty good, but inconstancies, penalties, and injuries do not land him in the tradition franchise LT to spot to protect the crown jewel, Mac Jones. An upgrade at LT slides Wynn inside where many believe he is better suited.
#3 is not a Need per say, but man would it be sweet.
Wet Dream: Myles Jack - Jacksonville Jaguars
I don’t think I need to go into the particulars on this player. He is young, miserable in Jacksonville (Like literally everyone in Jacksonville) and an absolute stud. The LB core for the Patriots looked to be a strength coming into the season, but veterans Hightower and Van Noy have lost a step, Uche looks to be a one trick pony and Juwan Bently is limited to run protection. The trade for Jaimie Collins has yet to pay dividends. This move would be another immediate impact with future considerations. Jack’s salary is no joke though. He’s got a cap hit of about $13 million the next 3 season although no guaranteed money after this year.
Look, the Patriots spent a cool 1/4 Billion in Free Agency this off season so a big money splash is a long shot, but there are still holes on this team and they have shown enough so far that Kraft should invest in making them better not only in the short term, but also the long term. With out Tom Brady here you are like everyone else. You’re going to have to spend to get high end talent. So open up the pocket book.
