DeBrusk scored 27 goals in in 2018. Nineteen goals in 2019 as a - 1 and so far in 17 games this season he has 1 goal, 5 points, and is a -4. That’s called a trend. He only has 4 goals in 13 playoff games. The kid can’t bury the puck. I understand the speed and potential talent is there, but there is just something missing.
Even the way he played as a rookie with 43 points and 16 goals, and he was a plus - 13. The kid was flying around the ice making an impact everywhere. This season he is getting benched to “get the best play out of him” aka lack “give a shit-ness”. How is that even possible on this Bruins team? Speaking of impossible, how is it possible to have a 3.1% shooting percentage in the NHL? Ask Jake. Or just fire one at his face.
The point here is this is the time to move on if you have decided he is past reproach as a Bruin. Which I have. He has interest across the league as a trade candidate and you have holes. I get his value is low, but show me the evidence that he is going to get back to his potential. And how long will that take? And if he gets there, when he gets there, what does your team look like? Are you still fighting for a cup? Are you in more of a rebuild in which case you just keep him? No, it’s time for the classic change of scenery move and Sweeney to earn his pay check.
Find a team who values him, toss in a young defensemen who you suddenly are full of, maybe a 1st rounder and get a difference maker on a cup run. Maybe you get lucky and the Predators value him enough take a shot at Forsberg or Ekholm. I’d even be okay with taking a stab at half a season of Taylor Hall. Let your core try to tap into that Hart trophy talent. How about Barkov down in Florida? Can we rescue that poor sap?
Don’t let another season of Bergeron, Pasta, and Marchand go by with out giving them a fighting chance at a cup while you wait for the Jake DeBrusk’s of the world to loosen their panties.
