Wyc can’t afford the Celtics
Big news coming in earlier this week, Wyc Grousbeck the majority owner of the world champion Boston Celtics is selling his stake of the team. Huge news coming after a championship and the team continuing to sign players to extensions.
That’s $930 million dollars alone for the starting five of the Celtics! Wyc is worth $1 billion according to Forbes. If you do the math along with luxury tax prices, Wyc and his group can not afford this team and that’s the biggest reason why he is selling which if you think of it, this is awesome!
A big reason why the Celtics are a money pit that doesn’t actually make you any money is that they play at the Garden which isn’t owned by the Celtics. They just rent the arena and can’t get upgrades and all the jazz that these other franchises can do. New ownership will be able to pay for this roster and rumor has it a new stand alone arena where one of the most storied franchises can show off kind of like how the Patriots have done.
It looks like Boston would have the perfect spot for the Celtics, right next to Encore casino. An arena, a hall of fame, gambling, shopping, bars and restaurants! The perfect new home for the 18 time world champions. I’m for the selling and if Wyc wants to take the Mark Cuban approach and just hang for a while and be the face that’s cool. Just make sure the guy you sell the team to has the funds to keep this team in tact.
