We witnessed the Perfect Preseason Football game
The Mac Jones era has officially begun. Take that however you want it. Should he be the starter? You ask me, I say yes. Based on last night alone? My heart, eyes, and balls say yes, but my brain says no. Boy did it set up an interesting couple weeks though.
Cam Newton is entrenched in the starting role. We saw that with the classic 2 series set for the veteran QB last night in addition to everything we have heard from camp. Cam Newton didn’t do anything to lose that position last night.
4 of 7. 49 yards. 0 TDs. 0 INTs.
He looked precisely how we all thought he would look. A couple fine throws, a couple head scratchers, and a near fumble holding the ball too long. Short sample size mind you.
Mac Jones through is 2 + quarters of work looked like a kid knocking on the door.
13 of 19. 87 yards. 0 TD’s. 0 INTs.
His best throw of the night was a 40 yard bucket toss dropped in the end zone. Outside of that there was nothing terribly flashy, but didn’t it just feel more like Patriots football? Three yards here, 4 yards there. Set your protection, play action, ball out quick. The 2 minute offense in the 3rd quarter was quick, in rhythm, chain movers. I’m not anointing Mac to the Hall of Fame I’m just saying it was a perfect night for the Patriots coaching staff.
I say that because you got the win and you got good play out of your rookie QB who should push Cam to be better or out of a job. The rest of the team had flashes of really nice football, Rhamondre Stevenson (10 carries. 127 yards. 2 TDs), Matthew Judon, JC Jackson, Quinn Nordin and his giant as catapult for a leg, but also more than a handful of “coachable moments”. The false starts, Isaiah Wynn’s turnstile, 3rd down defense. This is exactly the type of game Belichick is looking for. Pump up some tires and then demolition the entire car. Then rebuild.
Football is back, baby!
