The Red Sox Ruined Rafael Devers
The Red Sox Killed Rafael Devers
Rafael Devers must’ve been watching film with his eyes closed for the past seven years if he truly believes third base is still his after the Red Sox signed Alex Bregman.
Newsflash, Raffy—you’re out of shape, and you’re a defensive liability.
Devers is, statistically and undeniably, the worst defensive third baseman in baseball. He has led the league in errors at the position for seven straight seasons. Even on his best days, his glove work has been a glaring weakness. The Red Sox, a team that desperately needs to improve defensively—especially in the infield—just signed a reigning Gold Glove winner and two-time World Series champion. Yet, when asked if he’d consider moving to DH, Devers had the audacity to scoff at the suggestion, flapping his gums like he hasn’t been a defensive disaster for years—all while cashing in on a 10-year, $300+ million contract.
This is what happens when a franchise embraces mediocrity for too long. Losing breeds losers, and this is a loser mentality. This team has lacked leadership for years. If Xander Bogaerts were still here, if this were four years ago, Devers wouldn’t dare carry himself like this. But after three last-place finishes, zero urgency at the trade deadline, a string of failed offseason acquisitions, and a front office with a small-market mindset despite being the fifth most valuable sports franchise in the world, we get this entitled version of Rafael Devers—one who believes third base is his by default.
It’s time for the Red Sox to wake up. They made their move for Bregman. Now, it’s on Devers to accept reality.
