*IF the Celtics win, where would this comeback land in Boston sports history?
Down 3-0 to the Miami Heat fans across New England were calling for Joe Mazzulla’s head and to blow up the team, that this group just can’t do it, I’ll put my hand up and say I was one of them. I even cringed when Marcus Smart and Jaylen Brown both came out and said don’t let us win one just before game 4.
Something definitely happened with this team, they buckled up and bought in (and played defense) to the idea that they can do it, because Boston teams have done it. Being down 3-0 and coming back is something that Boston teams have done so where would this rank *IF the Celtics can do it on Monday?
The fact that this team is in this predicament to begin with is a head scratcher. The Celtics are the 2 seed playing a Miami Heat team that got in after nearly escaping the play in round and were the 8 seed. The Heat are basically playing with house money since their team has hit the injury bug with Tyler Herro and Victor Oladipo, both key players in the Heats rotation. Basically saying that this team should have never gotten to this point and that if they pull off the miracle on Memorial Day they would be a distant 3rd on this list. Also, the other 2 teams won it all.
Super Bowl 51 was the greatest NFL comeback of all time and greatest Super Bowl comeback of all time. The rally cry from Julien Edelman being down by 25 points was something the players got behind, “Gotta Believe” and “This is going to be a hell of a story.” He was right with both.
The Patriots backs were against the wall and pulled off the miracle, no it wasn’t a 3-0 comeback because the NFL doesn’t do that but being down 25 in the 3rd quarter has to be as close to that as possible. That’s why this will always be the 2nd best comeback in Boston Sports history.
Down 3-0 to their rival the New York Yankees in 2004, with the curse of the Bambino still in existence, and not winning a World Series since 1918, the Red Sox would always come up just short.
This team pushed history aside and just believed they could do it. Breaking the curse, winning the franchises first World Series in 86 years after advancing and beating the Cardinals 4 games to none. The bloody sock of Curt Schilling. Alex Rodriguez slapping the ball out of the glove of Bronson Arroyo. The series win was bigger than the World Series just because it was a sweep for the championship. Reminds me a lot of the Miracle on Ice when the United States beat the Russians in 1980. People always thought that was the Gold medal game when it wasn't. The win was to advance to the Gold medal game, same as the 2004 ALCS, the win was just to go to the World Series. Even 20 years later you can look back at that series and remember where you were because it was just that memorable.
So like the Patriots and the Red Sox, the Celtics must win Monday and finish the job and beat the Denver Nuggets to make this exclusive list.
