Everyone Has A Secret

I am sure I am not the only one living with a secret. For the past 31 years I have lived a life where I’ve let the narrative of being a closet nerd make me not admit to the fact I have a great passion for something.

Everyone has their own thing. For Bill, it’s having a part of his brain store sports facts from rare dates and just spit it off the top of his head. For Rich, he is musically gifted and has this charm where he can strike a conversation up with anyone. For me and my secret well, lets tell a quick story.

My older sister is 15 years older than me (does that make me an accident, you decide) and her boyfriend at the time who is now her husband has been in my life for 35 years and gave me this obsession/gift. It all started back in 1991. I was 6, and remember sitting in my living room with my sweat pants - shirt combo with my WWF wrestling ring in front of me and my wrestling figures. The match was Hulk Hogan vs The Ultimate Warrior. I was a huge Ultimate Warrior fan I would run around my house thinking I was him with my fake intercontinental championship belt wrestling my Ultimate Warrior pillow buddy. Ah yes, I am a closet wrestling fan and have been for a long time. It’s a soap opera for men. As I have told my wife countless times.

I have followed wrestling from the terrible comic book characters WWF used to put out, to the attitude era with DX and the NWO, to the ruthless aggression, to even now with the PG version that is god awful. I feel like if we did a “Are You Smarter Than A Trashcan” with wrestling topics I would destroy anyone. I just have a stupid insane amount of useless knowledge. The one thing that should be talked about now is what is happening with wrestling. Since WWE bought WCW back in 2001 no other organization has been able to compete with them. Sure TNA and Ring of Honor have tried but they didn’t have the money to keep the talent away from the bottomless pit of money WWE had to offer. Until now. All Elite Wrestling or AEW is changing the game and has got me watching weekly again. They have tore down that imaginary wall that no other promotion exists and have matches with “Impact Wrestling” and “New Japan”, which has that excitement I had back when I was watching WCW and wondering who will join the NWO next.

What AEW is doing may actually help light a fire under Vince McMahon’s ass and change the whole landscape of the wrestling world which I am excited for. Seeing guys come in from different promotions and work angles with out worrying who is going to lay down for the 3 count is amazing. Once Covid dies down AEW will probably be one of the biggest draws for shows in America. These guys are thinking out side the box and I can’t wait to see what happens in 2021.
