A breathe of sunshine
Giannis is with out a doubt the easiest athlete to root for as we stand here on the 22nd day in the year of our lord 2021. Not only did he win the NBA championship with the likes Kris Middleton as a running mate in an era where the Larry O’Brien trophy has only gone to either the greatest player of his generation and whatever hall of fame teammates he coerced into joining him or the greatest shooting team the NBA has ever seen, winning the most games in NBA history, and somehow still adding the 2nd greatest player of his generation.; wow that was a long sentence.
Not only did Giannis win in that NBA environment he did it in the city that drafted him when he didn’t have to and he called out the baby back bitches who formed those super teams that came before him. All while sounding humble as a nun, with the charm of 1,000 puppies, and a dazzling smile I could eat for breakfast.
God Damn did this guy change a lot of hot take opinions over night. Rightfully so Giannis’ game has been questioned in terms of late game execution. He can’t shoot. Not 3’s, not mid range, not FT’s. This was a fair criticism. Game 7 squashed a lot of that, for now. Giannis goes 17 of 18 in no less that 17 - 18 total minutes spent at the stripe practicing and shooting the actual free throws. He drops 50 with multiple late game buckets. His defense was unmatched. The blocks, the presence, the tenacity. It’s infectious, man. You could see his DNA written all over the Bucks team. Even that 10 foot brother of Side Show Bob, Brook Lopez was living above the rim.
As a Celtics fan and an NBA fan, I really hope this has an impact on Tatum, Brown, and the rest of the young All-Stars across the league. I get that ratings were down this year, but I blame that on that dirt pile of cargo shorts and Monster energy drinks they call Phoenix. Those fans are the toolliest of tool bags. I don’t totally blame them. As a fan base, when your teams and city has been irrelevant forever it’s hard to conjure up a significant identity. But, back to Tatum and Brown.
Wouldn’t it be great to see the youngsters in the NBA, Luka, Trae, Tatum, take on some of that pride we see from Giannis? Give fans in cities like Memphis, Atlanta, hell even Boston a reason to invest into their young stars. Not worrying about them leaving in 5 years just as they get good to join the sackless KD’s and Kyrie’s of the world to win an empty championship for a fanbase more interested in their sunglasses or whatever the fuck?
I have my doubts of course. The divide between a Duke upbringing and selling puka shell necklaces on the streets of Athens breeds two different types of cats I suppose. It was just such a pleasure watching one of those cats eat and shit all over the league this past week, just sayin.
