Apologize!
I’ve been saying all along. Chaim’s got a plan. True, I’ve been saying that plan sucks and he lacks the skill to pull it off. I’ve been saying John Henry ( and Lebron James) has been unwilling to spend which is unacceptable in the Boston market. Well don’t I have egg on my face? But, do I?
How much does the Devers signing change things? Your starting rotation is still the depth of your team, apparently. That depth starts with Chris Sale. The $30 million dollar man who has made 11 starts and threw 48 innings in two seasons. He’s followed up by 36 year old Corey Kluber. News flash this isn’t 2016. James “no arms” Paxton, Garrett Whitlock, and Bryan Bello round out your staff. The starting pitching is so mediocre at best we are lamenting losing guys like Rich Hill and Michael Wacha. In fact you were out bid for the services of 42 year old Rich Hill, who wanted to stay in Boston, by the Pittsburgh freaking Pirates.
The line up has lost 2 of it’s top 4 hitters in Boegarts and JD. Replaced by a 30 year old Japanese player and nobody or sure, 38 year old Justin Turner. You still have to live with the fact the Bloom replaced Bogaerts with Trevor Story who hit .238 and 16 home runs for the same price Bogaerts would have stayed in Boston for. The rest of your line up is question marks and fodder.
Bloom has clearly been on a war path to clear payroll and build a young core to grow with. That’s not a terrible plan. There are a number of problems with it though.
You’re the Red Sox. The highest ticket prices in the MLB being raised during a rebuilding era is no bueno and unnecessary. You can build and spend at the same time.
So far Bloom’s talent identification is hit or miss, mostly miss. We are a year away from really seeing “his guys” come through the system so it’s a wait and see from a draft and develop stand point. His free agent track record is pretty clear. “Diamond in the rough” which by definition is more miss than hit. His trade resume is abysmal. Mookie Betts, need I say more. I can and will. Last year’s deadline was confusing and stupid. Middling moves and staying above the tax line simply for PR is classic cowards play from Sox management. The question remains. Can Chaim Bloom field a championship baseball team?
You want to build with young talent? You have to show willingness to sign young talent. Lester, Benintendi, Mookie, Bogearts were all shuffled out the door. Now they finally have locked up Devers. Cool.
The signing of Devers is a sigh of relieve with an immediate question we’ve had all off season. Now what? Can you just tell us you’re rebuilding and Devers will be a key piece in that process. We hope and expect to have a young championship worthy team develop over the next couple seasons. We’re all big boys and girls. We can handle a little honesty. Which in turn we will rip you for whole heartedly. Fuck Lebron.
