The Patriots top trade targets are not what you would expect
News Flash! They aint doing shit. Welcome to the Red Sox era of being a Patriots fan. They are going to dangle as many stories about being in on a guy that they can in the wake of actually being could so they can drum up some excitement. Calvin Ridley or Brandon Aiyuke ring a bell? People will buy in too. Do you know why? Because they have a bottom 3 roster in the league, so every single fucking possible addition they could make outside of quarterback at this point makes sense. You can talk yourself into anybody new coming on this team because there is a very good chance they are better than the player currently occupying that position. I could even be talked into another quarterback. I’ve seen enough of Jacoby Brissett to know he is exactly who we though Jacoby Brissett was going to be.
Here’s the other reason it won’t happen. The needle is to thin to thread for a guy like Wolf. He botched the Ridley signing, was toyed with in the Aiyuke negotiations, and fell flat on his face in the draft as the Chiefs out maneuvered him with the exact trade he wanted to make moving up into the 1st round for a WR and again moving up into the end of the 2nd round for the LT from BYU. Wolf lacks the skills to pull off anything significant.
Oh, and money. The Krafts don’t want to spend money. The Patriots currently have the 3rd most cap space with $37.7 million and rank 12th in cash spending for 2024. Last year they were 31st, in 2022 they were 26th, in 2021 they were 4th, and in 2020 they were dead last 32nd. So it’s been 3 years since they burnt some cash, their just waiting for the “Right deal at the right time”.
Even so. I’ll play the game. Here are some names I’ve seen floated around. All of which make sense (please see above as to why) none of which will happen.
Azeez Ojulari, edge rusher
New York Giants are set for a complete rebuild, again. Ojulari is at the end of his rookie deal. The Giants already have Dexter Lawrence and Brian Burns. The Patriots can rush the passer. Put him on the list.
Evan Neal, tackle
Another New York Giant. Another hole for the Patriots. You can substitute any young underachieving tackle or offensive lineman here.
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore… etc etc.Tre’Davious White, cornerback
We were begging the Wolf pack to make a move for a 2nd Cornerback in the offseason. I love “Sounds of Silence” Jon Jones, but his height is exposed on the outside. Marcus Jones is a little mini me of Jon Jones with out as much talent defensively. Next up is Marco Wilson. Nuff said. It will take nothing to get White and will improve your depth. Give the defense a chance to bring itself back to relevance.
Demario Davis, linebacker
A possible cap casualty for the Saints who are projected to be, I believe the number is 1 Billion dollars over the cap next year. Proving yet again how bullshit the NFL cap is and how the Patriots have skated by for years using it as a barometer of spending. I wont pretend to know a lot about Demario Davis only to say that I know he is better than whatever the fuck Taki Taki is. This Line backing core has been atrocious for years. Do I have to do this again?
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore… etc etc.Tee Higgins, WR
Not happening. But, the disgruntled #1 wide receive will land on the list of potential trade candidate for the Patriots until Drake Maye comes to his senses and demands a trade unless they actually pull the trigger. Get used to it. The more realistic WR move would be someone like Jacoby Meyers, but again this is not happening. Why trade for talent at this position to help your young franchise quarterback when you have the likes of Javon Baker, Kayshon Boutte, Pop Douglas, and best hands in the league 2nd round pick Jaylen Polk?
