Top 5: Patriots Free Agency Signings

The Patriots have $131 million in cap space. The cap is mostly bullshit except when you discussing the Patriots every three years. Every three years the Kraft’s open their pocket books and generally spend close to the cap in actual cash. The last time this team spent real money was the free agency splurge of 2021 that brought in Hunter Henry, Jonnu Smith, Nelson Aghlor, Mathew Judon, and so on. That team won 10 games and made it to the playoffs by the way.

All that is to say this team will spend. They have to spend. They can’t not spend. They are the worst team in the league. They need a massive reset. They have their franchise QB, they control the draft board with the #1 pick, and they should control free agency with their wallets.

They have needs every where, but lets start at the top and work down. If the Patriots sign the top free agents Per PFF at their top 5 positions of need they can over pay and still have money left over. Watch

  1. WR: Tee Higgins $30 million per year. 10% of the cap

  2. LT: Ronnie Stanley $25 million per year. 9% of the cap

  3. Edge: Josh Sweat $20 million per year. 7% of the cap

  4. Safety: Jevon Holland $20 million per year. 7% of the cap

  5. LB: Dre Greenlaw $14 million per year. 5% of the cap

Total: $109 million. That leaves $22 million of their $131 million in cap space. Think what you want of those players. Mix an match your preference, but those are basically the 5 most expensive options at the biggest positions of need for the Patriots and they can afford to over pay every single one with plenty left over.

This won’t fix them over night. I don’t care if it’s over payment. I don’t care that the free agent hit rate is less than 50%. They need to start acquiring and building talent. You can’t do that if you suck. And because you suck you have to pay the tax. Pay it, eat it, choke on it, and find somebody who can actually draft. You’re welcome.
