Hey, It could work.

There is a whole lot of talk revolving around the Patriots offensive coaching staff. OTA’s were open to the media for the 1st time this week and we saw a hodgepodge of a coaching effort on the offensive side of the ball. Per reports Joe Judge was running the passing offense, Matt Patricia was calling running plays, and Bill Belichick himself was in charge of 11 v 11.

My first reaction. What the fuck?! It feels like the brain trust that once was the New England Patriots coaching staff has dwindled down to a handful of retread YES men and a couple wanna be Kings in waiting. Last year on the defensive side of the ball we watched the team struggle to control teams for the 1st quarter of the season. The struggle climaxed with a Week 6 loss to the Cowboys after a completed 3rd and 25 from Dak Prescott. The play in which was openly question by long time company man, Devin McCourty. From there is was reported that Bill took over play calling duties for his son and/or Jerod Mayo which lead to the #2 defense in the NFL. After the bye week the duties were handed back to the Mayo and Dr. Tongue bath.

Those results were less than stellar. Losses in 4 of the final 5 weeks including 2 games against division rival Buffalo where not a single punt was forced.

Now Belichick not only wants to duplicate the hierarchy of a clueless two headed monster on the offensive side of the ball, but also feels the need to over see it as he did the defense last year? Leaving the “let em score” defense all alone to be managed by the Lizard king and Captain quiet?

But, here is why it could work. Coaching is overrated. When it comes to good quarterbacks. And I’m putting my money on Mac being a good QB. Let’s look at a couple examples.

Kevin Stefanski. You think this poindexter is dragging mid tier QB to the Super Bowl? No. Joe Burrow, the #1 over all pick turned into a top 6 guy in the league and over came the horrible offensive line and inability draw up some plays that wouldn’t get him killed. If Joe had 1 extra second in the pocket they win the Super Bowl.

Here’s a question. Who were the OC’s for these quarterbacks? Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Deshaun Watson, Phillip Rivers, Dak Prescott? In all of these cases the OC was either inconsequential, sucked, or the head coach. The point being the QB is more important than the OC. If you want to tell me guys like Sean Peyton made a difference I’ll listen, but not for that long. How’s Taysom Hill or Jameis Winston look? Did Peyton transform those guys into Hall of Famers? How about even top 10 guys? No.

Even in the case of Brady and McDaniels. Josh has already failed leaving his guy once. I think he’s is a good coach and will do fine this time, but we can all agree the success of the Patriots offense was abundantly Tom Brady’s success.

So, with all that being said did any of those guys mentioned over come the potential albatross that is Judge and Patricia? No, I don’t think so. Can Mac Jones? Hey, could work.
