Wrestle Mania Night One recap
The Super Bowl of professional wrestling, WrestleMania night 1 was on last night. I bit the bullet and got the Peacock App at $4.99 a month to watch it. It’s the mack daddy of them all. I am here to give my thoughts on night one and give my Dr. BigMac ranking of the match and overall show. If you don’t know the Dr. BigMac ranking system its simple, 0-5 Big Mac scale, 5 being the best.
The opening of the show had the roster out on the stage along with Vince McMahon coming out to thank the WWE universe. Cool site to see knowing how brutal its been without fans for the past year, Wrestle Mania 37 had about 25,000 fans in attendance and for the roster and fans it was well deserving for the owner to come out and say thank you.
Dr. BigMac- 5 BigMacs
Drew McIntyre vs Bobby Lashley (c) WWE Championship
After a 30 minute weather delay that threw the show for a loop the opening match was for the title. Both of these guys have been in the business for 16 plus years. Both guys were fired from WWE, went to Impact Wrestling and made names for them selves to be brought back to be on the main card fighting for the title. The match started off slow trying to get the crowd to respond. It was weird to hear the live fans for the first time in over a year and both men used that during the match. Honestly I thought this was Drews match to win since he won the title in an empty arena last year but the long road for the title here is for Brock Lesnar vs Bobby Lashley and that is clear after Lashley defeated McIntyre clean last night with the Hurt Lock.
Dr BigMac-3.5 Big Macs (sloppy at first picked up towards the end)
Women’s Tag Team Title Number 1 Contender Match
Sloppy, zero story telling and due to the weather delay it was rushed. Most of these women are not the best wrestlers in the industry. This is the one where if you need a bathroom break do it cause there is nothing worth watching in this match. The winners of the match were Natalya and Tammina (both fathers are Hall of famers Jim the Anvil Neidhart and Jimmy Snuka). They move on to night 2 to face the champs, which i feel will be come a triple threat match with the Bella Twins coming back for one more match.
Dr. BigMac- 1 BigMac (terrible match)
Cesaro vs Seth Rollins
For the first time in Cesaro’s career he had a singles match at the show of shows. A fan favorite who management has never gotten behind but now is putting some faith in. One of my favorite matches from night one. Both these guys are at the top level in the industry both can wrestle and make their opponents look great so this one was sure not to disappoint. A back and forth match where I honestly thought Vince would have buried Cesaro just cause he hates to be told he is wrong about anything but again, I was wrong. Cesaro came out looked strong and got the pin in the middle of the ring. Hopefully this leads to something like a title shot at Summer Slam for him unlike his last push that got derailed.
Dr. BigMac- 4.5 Big Macs
AJ Styles and Omos vs The New Day (c) Raw Tag Team Title Match
This one is a head scratcher for me. Kofi Kingston of The New Day and AJ Styles are both great single wrestlers. Why they were put in this match I have no clue and for The New Day to lose the titles to a guy like Omos who wrestled his first match last night again is another head scratcher. This match feels like the Felger and Maz Patriots draft board. Just guys in the back being like who can the New Day defend the titles against and for some odd reason the dart hit AJ and Omos. New champs in AJ and Omos, don’t know where this story is going but hopefully it goes some where good.
Dr. BigMac- 3 Big Mac’s
The Monster among men Braun Strowman vs Shane McMahon
15 years ago I enjoyed when Shane got in to story lines and see him get his ass kicked in matches but now at 51 years old seeing him come wrestle 1 match a year and steal a spot from guys who deserve to be on the show is a terrible business move. Shane hasn’t appeared on tv for over a year and then its the road to Wrestle Mania and here he comes. The storyline behind this is that Shane called Braun stupid, just like this match was. Pointless, didn’t need to be on here and seeing Shane take a bump from the top of the cage was so predictable. Hated this one.
Dr. BigMac- 1 Big Mac
Bianca Belair vs Sasha Banks (c) Smackdown Women’s Title Match
For the first time ever, the women were in the main event of Wrestle Mania. Sasha Bank has broken all the walls in the industry. She was the first woman to main event a ppv, first woman to compete in hell in a cell, and now this achievement. She is one of the best women wrestlers in the game right now and deserved this. Bianca won the women’s royal rumble to get this title shot and is one of the up in coming wrestlers after making a name for her self in NXT. The sad part of this is that before this match started a lot of the fans left the arena. This is one of the reasons I payed for the show. I wanted to see these two go at it, great performers. The fans that left missed a great match. Both women had their moments in the match, great near falls where had people guessing who was going to win. Bianca has this long hair extension that she used in this match as a whip that helped her get the win and new Smackdown Women’s champion. One of the best matches of the night and well deserving of both.
Dr. Big Mac- 4 Big Mac’s
Overall night 1 was good but I am sure they are saving the best for night 2. Night 2 recap will come Monday and for Sunday Social we rank our favorite wrestlers of all time. Check out the video at 7pm tonight!
