WHAT ARE THE PATRIOTS DOING?
“We’re ready to burn some cash!”- Jerod Mayo 1/22/24
Well Jerod, we know that Robert Kraft made you walk back that statement because it was never Bill Belichick the one being cheap, it’s the Krafts, but what is this team doing? At the start of free agency the Patriots had about $100 million in cap space and this is what they have done.
QB Jacoby Brissett
1 year, $8 million ($6 million guaranteed)
RB Antonio Gibson
3 years, $11.25 million ($5.3 million guaranteed)
TE Austin Hooper
1 year, $4.25 million
LB Sione Takitaki
2 years, $6.645 million ($2 million guaranteed)
DT Armon Watts
1 year, $3 million ($800,000 guaranteed)
OL Mike Onwenu
3 years, $57 million ($38 million guaranteed)
TE Hunter Henry
3 years, $27 million ($16 million guaranteed)
WR Kendrick Bourne
3 years, $19.5 million ($5.5 million guaranteed)
OLB Josh Uche
1 year, $3 million ($2.3 million guaranteed)
OLB Anfernee Jennings
3 years, $12 million ($ million guaranteed)
WR Jalen Reagor
1 year, $1.29 million ($442,500 guaranteed)
All that money and you don’t address the glaring holes on the offensive side of the ball. Trent Brown is gone and doesn’t want to come back (thank god), you have a need at Left Tackle and what have we done to address that need? The left side of the line is the weak spot for this team. Don’t tell me Mike Onwenu is going to be that guy either because he belongs on the right side whether that is guard or tackle. So with Tyron Smith being that piece out there you sit on your hands for the Jets to swipe him up.
David Bakhtiari is still out there and we will see what he does but it seems as Eliot Wolf and the Patriots plan on addressing needs through the draft. But what kind of talent will be left in the 2nd round and on since at pick 3 you plan on taking either Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels, who will sit for the first year from all reports. You still don’t have a WR1 on this team either after letting Calvin Ridley go to the Tennessee Titans.
Tell me where you have heard this before, “We were in on the player and were willing to pay.” -Boston Bruins and Boston Red Sox. Are the Patriots turning in…..or have they always been cheap and now that we don’t have the best player behind center taking pay cuts and players coming in on the cheap to play with him, now everyone can see it? Patriots front office HAS TO hit on this upcoming draft, probably the most important draft in a very long time.
