Coach Vibes hates Drake Maye
Coach Jerod Mayo was asked about Drake Maye’s first impressions at Rookie Mini Camp. His assessment was less stellar.
"Look, he has a lot to work on. A lot to work on. But I have no doubt that he will put the time in," Mayo said, via team transcripts. "You didn't see him out here yesterday, but he was here all night trying to get on the same page as everyone else."
Yeesh. This is the same guy who before the draft said of Maye “He has a high ceiling, but also has a low floor.”
Drake May has an uphill battle when it comes to gaining his head coach’s approval. Drake Maye had some words of his own.
"It's been good, I think kind of the first day just feeling it out and just getting more and more reps," Maye said. "That's all something new takes -- getting more reps at it. … I felt pretty good out there today, so just have to keep working."
If I were to throw my tin foil hat on for a second. I could suggest that the coaching staff and the reporters in their pocket are doing what they can to tame the idea that Maye can start in week 1. This team is going to suck. Vegas does not have the Patriots favored in a single game this season. Some how they also have an over/under total of wins at 4.5. They can’t risk throwing their future franchise quarterback to the wolves on a team staring down another top 3 pick. No LT, no #1 WR, rookie HC, OC with no play calling experience, and Ben fucking McAdoo acting as the quarterback whisperer. They don’t want Drake Maye to start this season so keep telling us how shitty he is.
The other sound bite that caught my ear from Coach Vibes was another not so vailed shot at Bill Belichick
When it comes to the coaching staff, Mayo told reporters before practice that offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt will be “the lead guy” from the coaching staff responsible for working with the quarterbacks on a day-to-day basis. “There has to be balance there, you don’t want Drake hearing too many voices,” Mayo explained. “Once again, that’s why I’m saying that AVP (Alex Van Pelt) will be the lead guy as far as that communication with Drake.”
Oh, something different than the rag doll strategy they had for Mac Jones? Sure. It’s probably a good idea to stray away from that. However, if Jerod Mayo’s main strategy is to do the opposite of what Belichick did I’m not sure it’s going to achieve what he’s looking for.
Maye seems cool with it.
Maye is expected to be working closely with offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, with Mayo saying Saturday that he wants the OC's voice to be the lead among the QB-focused coaches in helping Maye develop.
"[Van Pelt] played the position, he's coached a lot of different quarterbacks, he understands it, and that's the best thing you want to see from a coach," Maye said. "He doesn't expect anything right away, he knows that there's going to be a growing side, a mental side to it, so he's understanding. But also, if you're not doing your right job, he's going to tell you."
Bottom Line. Coach Vibes has a lot to prove. To me he has not provided any confidence from behind a microphone.
