A Look Around The NFL
It’s June and the rumors are flying around the NFL. That is why I love this sport so much, 365 days you have stuff to talk about. As of today there are two mega stars in the NFL wanting a trade. Julio Jones and Aaron Rodgers have both made it clear they do not want to play for their organization any longer and have demanded to be traded. As a Patriots fan this is very intriguing. Two players who are arguably the best at their position want out. This is Bill Belichick’s wet dream.
Julio Jones has made comments that he wants to go play with a quarterback with a big arm, can throw the deep ball. Reading that and knowing that Cam Newton would be starting week 1 for us, I instantly knew we were out of the mix. There is probably only a handful of guys in the league that fits this description. Russ Wilson, Matt Stafford, Ryan Tannehill, and maybe Josh Allen. For the Patriots to get Julio it would take a lot of convincing and that contract is huge. I don’t see the Patriots doing it.
Aaron Rodgers had divided the Packers fan base according to CEO Mark Murphy. The comments Aaron has made publicly has hurt the Packers organization and him saying he never wants to step in that locker room again makes it seem like there is no coming back from this. The problem is the draft and free agency have already gone by and teams needing a quarter back are slim. The only realistic place I could see Rodgers being traded to that needs a QB is the Washington Football Team, or the Denver Broncos. Those are the only franchises that really didn’t address the need for QB during the draft or free agency.
Now as a Patriots fan here is the fun part. Which organization in the league with a GM and head coach could pull off this masterful trade and get both Aaron Rodgers and Julio Jones to compete for the next several years and win their 7th, 8th and 9th Lombardi Trophy while pissing off a guy and his wife in Florida? Bill Belichick, that’s who. Cam Newton sucks and from all accounts Mac Jones isn’t ready to lead this team. Aaron Rodgers is 37 years old and as we all know the QB life span in the NFL he could keep going for 4 to 5 more years. Green Bay doesn’t need a QB in return so what would you give up to get Rodgers? How about Stephon Gilmore, N’Keal Harry and 2 first round draft picks. Money works, they get an offensive and defensive player and draft capital. If you think you can’t take the AFC East let alone the AFC with Aaron Rodgers at QB and all these weapons we got in the offseason you must be high. But here let me give you another one.
You have Rodgers at QB now, one of the best deep ball throwers in the league and you have a disgruntle WR in Atlanta that has never won a Super Bowl that wants to win and play with someone who can throw the deep ball. Belichick calls Atlanta and knows they are in a rebuilding phase offers Sony Michel and next years 3rd and 2023 2nd round pick. Probably one of the best trades you could get around the league. Now you add Julio and Rodgers to this team obviously you are saying what about the cap, it’s the NFL we all know the cap is crap. Belichick would trim the fat to make this work and by god would you have one of the best teams in the league in my humble Bottom of the Totem Pole opinion. Barring any injuries you should win the AFC East, steam roll your way through the playoffs and have a date with the Super Bowl. Jesus, after talking myself into all this I need to go take a cold shower.
