The the #4 over all pick in last night’s MLB draft, Chaim Bloom and the Red Sox selected SS Marcelo Mayer. Although the Sox desperately need high end pitching in their farm system, no one can be upset with this pick. Mayer was rumored to be going #1 over all to the Pirates. For what most considered to be the best player available in the entire draft to slip to you at #4 is just fantastic.

Mayer is an 18-year-old left-handed hitter who hit .392 with 14 home runs in 34 games for Eastlake High School, a baseball powerhouse that also produced former Red Sox first baseman Adrián González and 2019 first-rounder Keoni Cavaco. It was while scouting Cavaco that Red Sox area scout JJ Altobelli discovered Mayer. Toboni would call Altobelli to talk about Cavaco and instead get an earful about the sophomore with smooth actions, obvious feel and natural leadership.

This whole Chaim Bloom experience is starting to take on a much fresher feel than the mercenary Dombrowski era. The moves being made have thought and research behind them. I actually trust Bloom and his staff to do the right thing with the #4 pick and wouldn’t you know it? They land as sure of a thing as you can find in the MLB draft.

More importantly, this kid has a set of lettuce and him that is sure to make the masses swoon! At 6’3” 188 lbs, a devilish smile, rocket arm, and silky swing and Suave attitude this guy will be prince of Boston when his number is called.

“I throw those names out there not to set expectations for him or anything,” Toboni said. “But I say Seager because Marcelo does have a little bit of a bigger build. I say Brandon Crawford because, if you watch this kid take pregame groundballs, he’s one of the cockiest defenders I’ve ever seen in my life. I say that with positive tone behind it, where he’s flipping balls with his glove, and catching balls through the legs, and going behind the back. It’s not like he’s showing off. It’s just kind of his nature. It all comes pretty easy to him.”
