The Patriots have to trade back
Going into the off-season, the Patriots had the worst offensive roster in the league. Several weeks into the league, post free agency frenzy, and heading into the draft the Patriots have the worst offensive roster in the league. They have made it abundantly clear that they are building "the right way ". Which is through the draft and apparently means signing ancillary pieces with high talent for short money is useless when you think you're gonna suck.
As stupid as that philosophy is, your committed to it now. So you better stack some high end talent through the draft if you're not going to pay for it. That extra six round pick for McCorkle isn't going to help you. You need front end viability in draft pics. You have the best asset you're going to have hopefully for a very long time to do that in the number three overall pick with three a consensus 3 Quarterbacks projected to go in the top 3 pics.
Of course, you need a quarterback, too. But you're not the Minnesota Vikings. Far from it. You are not a young quarterback away from being competitive. You don't have that luxury. Never mind the fact that all the odds are against you that the quarterback drafted high is even going to work. If the Patriots take that kid at three they need it to succeed in a big big way. Bigger than Minnesota need it, because again they actually have talent.
Please stop with the phrase "if you love him, you have to take him". No shit. And if Dr. Bigmac grew 6 inches he'd actually be of normal height and weight. But we are not living in a fantasy land. No one has a crystal ball. You have to play the odds. The odds here say, acquire more pics in the first round and second round and address your glaring needs at the three most important positions on the football field that you have since neglected. left tackle, wide receiver, and, of course, quarterback. That quarterback won't be a consensus top three pick, so you better hope Elliot Wolf in the Packer way, have some of that quarterback, juju magic up their sleeve.
