Your life will not change tonight

It may feel like this night can shift time and space, but Einstein’s theory of relativity.. nope my brain stops there. Sorry.

Draft night gives fans of franchises like the Browns or Dolphins a brief moment of hope. Teams like the Bengals and Lions, not so much. They have succumb to a life time of suck. For the dregs of the league though, this night starts a new. Really, no matter how terrible your team is even if it’s being run by a meat hammer on legs tonight could change your fortunes!

However, it’s important for me to know that you know even if the Patriots trade up to get the newest darling of New England Justin Fields, you still have to wake up tomorrow and slog away at a job you hate. Unless you wised up and plan on banging out with a legitimate sickness aka hangover disease. Which may be worse because you’ll be all hungover and come to the realization that Cam will still be starting the season. Puke town x 2.

Speaking of trading up. Into the top 5. For a QB you have watched play maybe twice. Giving up multiple future picks. Is it the best idea? Here’s some stats;

ESPN:

Only 19 of 45 1st round QBs drafted 2000 - 2016 have gotten 2nd contracts.

Not 1 QB drafted in the 1st round 2009 - 2016 is with the team that drafted them

1980 - 2000 the average draft position for QB was 13.9

2001 - 2020 average draft position for QB is 2.1

15 of the last 20 drafts have had a QB taken #1 over all

In the last 6 drafts, 15 QB’s were taken in the top 10

Out of 60 QBs drafted in the 1st round since 2000, 24 of them have had successful careers 41%

Out of the 21 QBs drafted in the 2nd round since 2000, 7 have had successful careers 33%

According to NFL.com 7 out of the top 10 best QBs of 2020 were drafted #10 or higher.

The point being there is no guarantee that drafting a QB in the top 10 is going to save your franchise or even stabilize it. Especially if you start acting all Philadelphy or Washington Football Teamy and trade away your future for “The Guy”. All I can say is if that’s your approach you damn well better be right. But the history and statistics tell us that is usually not the case.
